"Crossguard X-13" sample art

More ancient pixel art from another abandoned concept, a little more self-assured this time if not any easier on the eyes. For some reason, the imagery of a street gang of streetsigns really took over my brain for a few weeks, and during this time it apparently mated with some Ditkoesque surrealism and anime trope-busting, the resultant child being this little abomination - again, there was once an overstuffed story, but never anything resembling a plan for implementation. As with many of my early concepts, I can no longer say if I would even *play* a game like this, but I'm certainly happy to have grown wise enough to not have any desire to *make* it.

Setting:

“Crossguard” is set in Terminal City, the first self-replicating city in the world. Built in the middle of the Pacific ocean, it is a constantly expanding mesh of skyscrapers and elevated freeways, with construction and traffic handled by a work force of artificially intelligent robots called Mechanites. In recent years, a gang of criminal Mechanites under the control of “King” Ennio Xing have taken control of parts of the city, creating traffic disturbances which disrupt the city’s perfectly calculated flow. The only organization which can stop Xing is the Crossguard force, a human-led traffic force formed to keep the city running in case of a Mechanite failure.
